Golf cart brakes squeal or won't hold: causes and costs
Golf cart brakes that squeal, pull, sink toward the floor, or let a parked cart roll are almost always mechanical wear in a simple system: cables, shoes, and drums. Most fixes are an adjustment at about $75 or shoes and/or drums at $100 to $250, with a full overhaul at $200 to $400 for a cart that has gone years without service. On a cart registered for Griffin’s city roads, a parking brake that does not hold is also a missing piece of required equipment.
Check this first
- Pedal travel. Press the brake pedal. If it goes much farther than it used to before the cart slows, the cables need adjustment.
- Parking brake test. On a gentle slope, set the parking brake and step out (keep a hand on the cart). If it creeps, the parking brake is not holding.
- Push test. In neutral with the key off and the parking brake released, the cart should roll freely on a flat surface. If it drags, a shoe may be stuck against a drum.
- Listen. A high squeal often means glazed shoes or dust; a grinding sound means metal on metal and should not wait.

Why it matters more in Griffin
The equipment list. Code of Griffin Sec. 90-217 requires “a braking system sufficient for the weight and passenger capacity of the vehicle, including a parking brake” on any PTV driven on city roads, and Sec. 90-217(b) puts the duty to keep it working on the owner. Georgia’s statewide PTV equipment list, O.C.G.A. 40-6-330.1, opens with the same requirement. Under Sec. 90-221, a violation of the PTV article can be charged against the owner, with fines up to $250 for a first offense.
Passenger load. The city’s standard is a braking system sufficient for the weight and passenger capacity of the cart. A cart that stops fine with one rider may not with a full rear seat. Griffin also limits occupancy to one person per designated seat.
Stop-and-go use. In Sun City Peachtree, Spalding County’s 25 mph subdivision limit applies (County Code Sec. 7-1014), and county cart rules apply the same traffic regulations that govern other vehicles (Sec. 7-1013). Short trips with frequent stops wear shoes faster than steady driving.
Damp drums. The NOAA normals station at Experiment, about a mile and a half from the center of Griffin, averages 54.19 inches of precipitation a year. A cart parked outside or in a damp carport can develop surface rust on its drums, which squeals for the first few stops of the day. If it fades after a few stops, it is usually cosmetic; if it persists, the shoes or drums need attention.
