Golf Cart Motor and Controller Repair in Griffin

When an electric golf cart clicks, hums, jerks, or does nothing, the problem is somewhere in the drive circuit: the key switch, the pedal switch, the solenoid, the speed controller, or the motor. Typical installed prices are $100 to $250 for a solenoid, $300 to $600 for a speed controller, and $300 to $1,000 for motor repair or replacement. Every one of those parts gets metered before it is replaced, because the battery pack and the cables can produce the same symptoms for much less.

The drive circuit, in order

PartWhat it doesTypical failure sign
Key / main power switchTurns the drive circuit on and offNothing at all, or the cart cuts out over bumps
Forward/reverse switchSets direction and, on many carts, the reverse beeperNo movement in one direction; no reverse warning sound
Pedal (micro) switch and throttle sensorTells the controller you want to goSilence when the pedal is pressed, or jerky starts
SolenoidConnects the pack to the controllerA click with no movement
Speed controllerMeters current to the motorCart stutters, runs only at low speed, or shows a fault code
MotorTurns the wheelsHumming without movement, burning smell, loud bearings

Testing runs top to bottom. The fault is often one of the cheaper parts on the list, or the batteries feeding it.

Griffin’s equipment rules and the drive circuit

Two items on the City of Griffin’s PTV equipment list (Code of Griffin Sec. 90-217) live in the drive circuit, not the lighting circuit:

  • A main power switch. When it is off, or the key is removed, the drive circuit must be dead, and a key may only come out in the off position.
  • A reverse warning device that works at all times when the cart is in reverse.

On many carts the reverse beeper is wired through the direction switch, so a cart that has lost its beeper may have a worn switch rather than a bad buzzer. Both are things a technician checks on a registered cart. Georgia’s statewide PTV equipment list, O.C.G.A. 40-6-330.1, includes the same two items.

Gas carts

Gas carts have their own drive problems: starter-generators, belts, clutches, and fuel delivery. In Griffin, a gas PTV also has to meet Code of Griffin Sec. 90-216, which requires an exhaust system in good working order and a cart that does not backfire or make loud noises. A cart that pops or backfires on a city road needs carburetor or exhaust attention for more than comfort’s sake. Note too that Spalding County’s Sec. 7-1013 bars gas-powered golf carts from the county’s paved recreation paths.

Speed changes need care

Owners sometimes ask for a higher top speed. Under Georgia law, a PTV is a vehicle capable of a maximum level-ground speed of less than 20 mph (O.C.G.A. 40-1-1(43.4)). A cart modified to go faster may no longer fit the definition its city or county registration depends on. Griffin’s ordinance treats a low-speed vehicle (over 20 mph, up to 25 mph) separately, and requires it to display a current motor vehicle tag. Know the cart’s actual speed before any controller or motor upgrade.

Before you book

Describe exactly what you hear and see when you turn the key and press the pedal: a click, a hum, a fault light, nothing. Check that the tow/run switch, if your cart has one, is in run. The clicks but won’t move page has a self-check, the repair cost calculator gives a range, and every price is on the pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a golf cart solenoid cost to replace?

Typically $100 to $250 installed. A solenoid is the most common cause of a cart that clicks but will not move, but a weak pack or a corroded cable can make the same click, so it is tested first.

What does a golf cart controller cost?

Typically $300 to $600 installed, depending on the cart and the controller. Controllers are tested with a meter before replacement, because a bad throttle sensor or a loose plug can look like a failed controller.

Is the main power key switch part of this repair?

It can be. Griffin's equipment list requires a main power switch that makes the drive circuit dead when it is off, with any key removable only in the off position. A worn key switch that cuts out or lets the key come out while the cart is on gets diagnosed with the rest of the drive circuit and quoted after diagnosis.
